Depression is a serious mental health condition that affects a person’s mood, thoughts, and ability to function in everyday life, going far beyond temporary sadness or stress. It often involves persistent feelings of hopelessness, emptiness, or worthlessness, along with symptoms such as low energy, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep or appetite, and loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. People can become depressed for many reasons, including imbalances in brain chemistry, genetic predisposition, and prolonged stress. Life experiences such as trauma, loss, major life changes, chronic illness, or feelings of isolation can also contribute to the development of depression. These factors often interact, making depression a complex condition, but it is common and treatable with proper support and care. You are not alone if you suffer from depression although your mind may convince you you are.

Here are some ways to combat depression.

Behavioral activation- encourages individuals to engage in small, meaningful activities—such as taking a walk, completing a simple task, or reconnecting with a hobby—to help rebuild motivation and counter withdrawal.

Cognitive restructuring- a core CBT exercise, involves identifying negative or self-critical thoughts, examining the evidence for them, and replacing them with more balanced and realistic perspectives. Journaling- can help process emotions, track mood patterns, and express thoughts that may be difficult to say out loud.

Gratitude exercises- such as writing down a few positive moments each day, can gradually shift focus away from negativity.

Mindfulness and grounding practices- help individuals stay present and reduce rumination by observing thoughts and feelings without judgment.
